WHAT IS RAMADAN

                          RAMZAN

About Ramadan or Ramzan:  Ramadan is an holy season for the people of Islam.  For during the time leading up to the day Ramadan ends, people fast and pray; abstain from drinking or smoking, from dawn until the sun sets. This focus on fasting is taken up to cleanse oneself and grow spiritually and therefore, come closer and closer to God.  This is done for the sake of God and for his greater glory.  According to Islam, fasting comes under one of the five pillars and, it is one of the important type of worship. Read More >>>

The name “Ramadan” comes from the Arabian language meaning “severe heat”.  It is in this heat that sins are burnt and purified with good deeds.  The directions for fasting have been given by God himself.  In the Quran, God declares that ‘fasting has been written down upon you, as it was upon those before you”.  So, it is a direct command from God himself.

Meals are prepared only twice a day, that is before the sunrise (suhoor) and after the sunsets (Iftar).  Before both the meals prayers (Ramadan’s Dua) are recited by the family, along with their relatives
and relatives, and consumed whole heartedly. Ramadan falls on the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The lunar cycle determines the Islamic calendar.  The precise time of Ramadan
varies from place to place.  Some rely on the sightings of the moon and while the others rely on science.  However, the priest (Imam) will inform the correct time of Ramadan before it begins.

This holy season brings extraordinary eagerness and enthusiasm for everyone, including children who readily watch fasting with their elders.  The children enjoy and look forward to the excitement and thrill of the moon sighting and eating sumptuous meals with their families and relatives. It brings everyone together, young and old alike, and unites them as one family.

The day when Ramadan ends is called Eid-ul-Fitr. The meaning of that is ‘festival of the Breaking of the fast’. On this day, they thank and praise Allah for his manifold blessings.  The festival begins when the first sighting of the moon seen in the sky.  Special services are held in Mosques across the world as a family united in harmony and love. They dress in their finest clothes, give gifts to children and spend quality time with their family and friends.

Let us wish all our muslim brothers and sisters
                                             A
                HAPPY AND JOY FILLED RAMADAN.
