                               NOUNS USED AS SUBJECTS :

A noun may be used as the subject of a sentence.  The subject of a sentence tells who or what is being talked about.

Examples: 1. Sheila strolled around the garden quietly.

                             2. Thousands gathered in the park.

-- Sheila = subject and strolled = verb

Sometimes the subject is not placed next to the verb.  Other words may separate them.  Occasionally the subject is at the end of the sentence.
